I guess I should comment... [Dec. 1st, 2008|12:58 pm]
Like many others here I was sad to read that Savage Garden is closing. I remember the first time walking through its doors on a Friday night nearly 12 years ago. My regular haunt was Friday nights at Studio 69. I was crazy about Bigod 20, NIN, Skinny Puppy and I had just discovered Project Pitchfork and Covenant. I asked the guy at Penguin Records if he knew of any clubs that played "Industrial" music, his response was Sanctuary and Savage Garden. Savage Garden being a few blocks closer, I decided to give it a try. Back then Savage was much different than it is now, I think there may have been 30 people. The dancefloor was considerably smaller and darker. A couple of spot lights covered in coloured gels and a few light bulbs attached to an old tv antenna. It was awesome, I was somewhat disappointed when the new light system was added years later. One of the first people I met there was Ron (RIP). Ron was friendly and danced to every song that was played. I felt welcomed immediately. I heard all this music that was new and exciting to me, though I probably drove Paul (then DJ Lord Pale) crazy asking him about every other song he played. He was always patient and took the time to come over and talk music with me. Over the years Paul and I have had a very similar taste in music and he remains one of favourite DJs.

Jump ahead to 2002, DJ M was deported to Italy, and the new Friday night DJ was not working out. Paul asked if I was interested in the DJ residency, an offer that I quickly jumped at. Decompression Fridays was born. Decompression lasted for approximately 5 years until life got in the way and I wasn't able to devote the time to a weekly club night. I continued to DJ the monthly Dark Retro night for a while but when I moved to Burlington it became increasingly difficult for me to attend. I was happy that Paul continued the night and it will be one of the last events at Savage. I would be thrilled to get an invitation to spin the last one with him.

Well I haven't been to Savage as often as I would have liked over the last couple of years, but it was always nice to know that it was there if I wanted to go...

Thanks to Paul and Brenda for their friendship and the memories.

Jeepers Creepers Siouxsie... [Nov. 27th, 2008|10:17 am]

While driving to work this morning I was listening to Siouxsie & The Banshees' disc Twice Upon A Time The Singles. I have always loved the song Peek-A-Boo, I found myself playing it over and over. I felt like I was being hypnotized or there was some type of subliminal overdub in the weird hurdy-gurdy like backing music. Well curiosity got the better of me and I decided to investigate.

The songs unique instrumentation (mostly percussion and an accordion) is a result of the entire track being backmasked. The Banshees learned to play the song backwards and then, once recorded, the track was played back in reverse and Sioux sang her lyrics over it.

Further, a minor controversy ensued after the songs release as the lines to the chorus (Golly jeepers - Where'd you get those peepers? - Peepshow, creepshow - Where did you get those eyes?) were found to be too similar to the lyrics in the 1938 song "Jeepers Creepers". To remedy the situation and to avoid legal action, Siouxsie & the Banshees gave co-songwriting credit on "Peek-a-Boo" to Harry Warren and Johnny Mercer, the creators of "Jeepers Creepers".

Time to get off my arse... [Jun. 26th, 2008|11:45 am]
As my debt grows deeper and deeper my patience wears thinner and thinner... I have always had realistic financial expectations. I never expected to be wealthy, but at this point in my life with a young son, mortgage and in dire need of a new vehicle. I have to start looking at potentially changing my situation. I think I live rather sensibly, rarely do I eat out, I purchase domestic beer and have given up the night club lifestyle. With the rising cost of gas, groceries and damn near everything else. I have been seriously thinking how to supplement my income. I am not a risk taker but I have come to the realization that I am never going to make any money working for others. I fault no one but myself, I've become lazy and accepted things the way they are for far too long.

I had an epiphany today and have started the ball rolling.

Books [Jun. 17th, 2008|04:18 pm]
I set a goal for myself to try and read 50 books this year as it already June and I've only read 13, I think I am destined to fail. I've read some rather interesting books...

The list thus far:

Beyond Good and Evil - Friedrich Nietzsche
Cross - James Patterson
Pure Dynamite - Tom Billington
Concrete, Bulletproof, Invisible & Fried: My Life As A Revolting Cock - Chris Conelly
Hitman: My Real Life in the Cartoon World of Wrestling - Bret Hart
The Dirt - Motley Crue and Neil Strauss
Scar Tissue - Anthony Kiedis and Larry Sloman
The Hardest (Working) Man In Showbiz - Ron Jeremy
Touching From A Distance - Deborah Curtis
Party Monster - James St. James
The Long Hard Road Out Of Hell - Marilyn Manson and Neil Strauss
White Line Fever - Lemmy Kilmister and Janiss Garza
The Secret Life of a Satanist: The Authorized Biography of Anton LaVey by Blanche Barton

I was hoping to go to HMV to pick up the DVD Control (released today) as it is based on Touching From A Distance by Deborah Curtis.

Two Saturdays ago I went to my good friend Kevin's Stag & Doe in Hamilton. It was rather bizarre seeing so many people that I went to High School with. I embarassed myself a couple of times when people came up to me and said "Dan remember Me?" Sadly I could not, and they say that the mind is the second thing to go... I was actually pleasantly surprised that compared to a number of them, I have aged fairly well.

I spoke with one of my friends that ran the event and he said that they did not make a lot of money for Kevin. He then went over a number of the expenses and my jaw hit the floor when he told me they spent $350 on a DJ. This "DJ" basically played tunes from her laptop, no mixing just a non-stop stream. She was a high school friend and she spent the majority of the night socializing. I would have set up my computer for free.

Now in my 15+ years of djing I have never been paid anywhere close to $350. I am seriously thinking about setting up a little DJ service for Stag & Does, weddings and corporate parties. I was asked to do a wedding last year and turned it down because the bride wanted me to play Beyonce, Rhianna and some of that other stuff. I politely told her that I did not own any of that genre of music and maybe she should ask someone else. Little did I know that DJs were getting paid $350 and up to play that stuff. If I could do a couple events a month, it would be a great way to supplement my income. Just thinking is all...

Jeremy where are you?!? [May. 9th, 2008|10:12 am]
I'm a bear called Jeremy I can do most anything...

When I was a wee lad I really enjoyed the childrens shows on TVO - Jeremy The Bear, Doctor Snuggles and Simon in the Land of Chalk Drawings were my favourites. My little guy is crazy about the Backyardigans and Thomas the Train, and while I rather enjoy them as well, watching them 24/7 is starting to drive me a tad crazy. He is almost two and he really seems to enjoy stop motion animation, I think he would enjoy Jeremy the Bear and to be honest I would love to revisit the show as well. Unfortunately the episodes have never been released on DVD. In my search for Jeremy I found out that he was called Barnaby in the UK and had a deeper voice, but the same theme song. To the powers that be give us our beloved Jeremy!

I did however find boxsets of Doctor Snuggles and that bad acid-trip of a show HR Puff'N'Stuff.
